" Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Fencing began centuries ago as a method of survival for soldiers. It's developed into one of only 4 sports that's been a part of every single Olympics. Our Trevor Peterson took a crash course in this fast-moving sport. Fencing is a sport that's been around for over 1,000 years. Well, I don't have 1,000 years to learn it today. I only have one hour. Bob Bianco the president of the Fargo-Moorhead Fencing Club is going to try and teach me the sport in one hour. Bob, is that even possible? Bob: “We can get you the basics pretty quick. What I'm trying to get you to do is get your body in the proper posture. There you go!” Reporter: That is really uncomfortable. Bob: “You're rolling off your back toe and landing on your front heel. That's the advance. So let's get you suited up with a jacket, mask, and a glove.” Reporter: How much does one of these cost?
Bob: “Between $140-$160” Fencing is one of the safest sports you can compete in. There are 3 weapons. The first weapon that most people start with is the foil. You have to land with the point in order to score. The tip of the foil is the 2nd fastest thing in sport. Reporter: Kind of like me when I get moving. You will see the 3rd fastest thing in sport coming up. Bob: “You want a straight line through the tip down to your elbow. So, it becomes an extension of your arm. Stand, advance, and hit.” Bob: Now you have a feel for moving and attacking. Let's show you something new. Perfect! Because you've parried, you've stopped my attack. The parry is always followed by what we call the repost, which is an attack. Reporter: I'm surprised, this is more thinking than I thought it would be. Bob: “It's like chess at 100 miles per hour.” Reporter: Alright, I had my first fencing experience. Bob, how did I do for my first time? Bob: “Pretty good. Your form is a little raw, but it's coming along.” Reporter: What would you say to someone who's thinking about trying the sport? Bob: “Fencing is a great sport, in that it's a sport for the young and old.” Fencing is growing ten percent a year. This year, the F-M Fencing Club has high school members for the first time. "
